I fell in love with my garden again....

On Tuesday after edging and weeding most of the garden beds in the front yard, I planted a few more things in the Mail Box Bed:



I transplanted some phlox and sweet woodruff from the front patio bad. You can't see the sweet woodruff very well because it's behind the daylillies. The Ajuga I planted at the end of the last year is doing great. The peonies look like they like it there too. They came from Stephen's grandmother's house and before that they came from back east somewhere in the 1800's.



Wednesday I started on the back yard. I weeded garden Bed D.



I added few things from the fence beds. I'm going let the fence beds go this year. Then figure out what I want to plant there. I want to get the weeds under control first so I'm not constantly weeding that area.

Then I weeded the Patio Tree Bed.



I added some sedum ground cover, more yarrow and some salvia. I also cleaned off the porch but I don't have a photo of that. Not much to see really.

I also prepared Garden Bed C. I attempted to grow pepper and some basil in this bed last year and failed. I had laid an old sheet down to prevent weeds so only a little weeding here. Then I had an empty flower canvas to fill.



So I transplanted some purple gay feather, yarrow, sedum, cone flower, salvia, a mystery plant, etc...

I called that good for Wednesday so Thursday I prepared part of the new Herb Bed. The bed was a fail as for Asparagus. It gets too wet. I moved many of these herbs from another wet part of the garden so they should do fine here.



Here we have thyme, cat mint, chives, salad burnett, a sad bit of lavender that barely made it over the winter, winter savory, and cone flower.



I did a bit more work on the Patio Bed. I added some of the mystery plant, sweet woodruff and some cat mint where you can't see it. I took a lunch break then decided to do a wee bit more so I weeded the two Back Patio Beds.




The Ajuga-Woodruff bed Patio Bed was fill with dead nettle and other weeds. I pulled them all out and added some yarrow and a cone flower. Then I weeded the Hosta Bed but I'm holding off on adding more to this bed for now.

I planted two more grapes as well. These are the Canadice, good for jellies, wine, juice and table grape. We'll be eating ours. We got new grapes at Vinland Nursery, so now we have a Kataba and a Niagra.

We also picked up a fragrant Purple Cone flower called - I did save the tag. It doesn't loo like much yest since I cut back the first flower. You want to do that when you get new plants, so the plant establishes good roots first rather than flowers.

We were sold on its butterfly attracting properties since the monarchs really liked it while we ere there. That was something that was pretty cool about this nursery they had bugs. How many nurseries do you see like that.

On the way home we stopped off at Davenport Winery to get some Kansas grown wine. We like it there so I recommend taking a trip out. They are open for wine tasting 4-7pm on the weekdays and 12pm- 4pm on Sat.

The potatoes are going gang busters at least on top.

In the Garden

It doesn't look like much yet...looks more like a garden of straw but I am hopeful. I really haven't shared much of the garden because it never seems like much in the beginning then I harvest everything before I get pictures of the bounty.

A view of the garden looking southeast. In the corner I plan to place a bird bath and some more grapes. The lush green band is a bed of strawberries that I will be harvesting very soon.

Just behind the strawberry bed is the asparagus bed which is struggling right now because it's being attacked by asparagus beetle. I go out daily to crush the little buggers and pick off the eggs they lay on the asparagus. The bed to the right of the boards is Jade's bed which she planted tonight the one to the right of hers is Corbin's.

Jade planted: lettuce , turnips, morninglories, mustard greens, carrots, cherry tomatoes. Corbin has some basil and carrots. He was going to plant watermelon but changed his mind and wants to plant corn.

Below is the garden looking from the southeast corner. You can see the tips of the struggling asparagus and the lush strawberry patch. The bed to the right of the boards has potatoes, then a bed of peppers, then the tomatoes.



This is the east side of the garden right next to the fence. It has raspberries that we will get to harvest this year and a varietys of perennials: salvia, black eyed susan, yarrow.


A lovely Salvia one of my favorites in the garden, right next to it, not blooming yet, is Purple Gayfeather another favorite of mine an native to Kansas.



Here's the herb bed just behind the tomato bed: oregano, chives, sweet grass, sage, and one other herb that I forgot what it is.



This is Rose - I call her Rose - She is a Rose. I have tree in the yard I call Fred. I don't have a picture of Fred, yet.


I have more to share later. There are a few beds I didn't get pics of yet.

On Gardening

Ok not much on gardening but a card I received from Finland today for the what is your hobby tag on he postcrossing forum.

I've have been watering the garden lots today. Dang I am hot. I'm so hot think I'm melting. Need cool air, need water, need a beer .... oh good I have one ;0)

I'm Exhausted

I was LAST weekend. This is a bit of old news but it lets you know what we've been up to.

I'm tired but it's a good tired, a diggin' in the garden tired. I got rid of a bunch of weeds or atleast tamed them for a bit. I covered some of the garden paths with straw so I can prevent grass and weeds growing there. I did a little mowing too. In places where the weeds were really bad in the path I covered the paths with newspaper first.

Right now it looks pretty barren but it looks much better with straw on the paths. I'm looking forward to lot of abundance in the garden this summer.


You can see the beginning of the huglekultur bed Stephen is working on.



The strawberries look like they are going to produce lots this year if the I can keep the birds away from them. I am finally seeing some asparagus shoots coming up in my new asparagus bed. The lettuce is doing well too.



In between playing in the garden I had water fights with the kids. I read some email. The kids played with a little neighbor girl again today and road bikes with her on our block. Jade watched some TV and so did Corbin. I took breaks from garden work to read some email and make some lists.

This weekend has been RAIN. Lots of it. I'm home alone, while the kids and Stephen braved a camping trip with the KAW Bioregional group. They must be having an okay time. Corbin said he was packing his imagination.
